In New York, dogs are now only allowed to take the underground in bags

New York's transport authorities want to ban dogs from the subways and only allow dogs to ride in portable containers. But dog owners in the Big Apple know how to help themselves with the #subwaydogs campaign.

What is almost considered a natural habitat for small Chihuahuas these days, larger dog breeds tend to eye with suspicion: the (hand) bag. But this is exactly what four-legged friends of all sizes must now squeeze into if they want to travel with their owners on New York's public transport, according to a not-so-new regulation.

The New York City Transit Authority's rules state: "No person may bring any animal on or into any conveyance or facility unless enclosed in a container and carried in a manner which would not annoy other passengers. (Section Section 1050.9, h.1)

But in the meantime, resistance is mounting, because New Yorkers are being extremely creative in interpreting this rule: under the hashtags #subwaydog and #nycsubwaydogs, New York dog owners upload photos on Instagram of their attempts to take their four-legged friends along in bags. The result: bizarre photos and amused passengers. Now dogless people all over the world have also taken notice of these pictures. It remains to be seen whether and how the transport companies will react.

Sure, huskies fit in bags too! After all, the New York Public Transport Authority does not prescribe the maximum bag size in its rules ...

Husky Brady also proves this. Kacy Burdette's dog rides the New York underground for the first time. The expression on his face speaks volumes.

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi "Walter" lives in Brooklyn and rides the underground almost every day. He obviously doesn't mind the bag.

Little Doralee from Williamsburg has it a little easier with her size. The young pug still fits into a normal handbag.

Camping with a dog is the trend! We have compiled the most beautiful photos of dog owners and their four-legged friends.
